Attack on Hero Alam: 2 accused put on 3-day remand

A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed on a two-day remand the two accused who were arrested over an attack on Hero Alam, an independent candidate of the Dhaka-17 by-election.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arfatul Rakib passed the order.

The investigating officer of the case, sub-inspector Noor Uddin of Banani Police Station, sought a seven-day remand for the accused- Chanoar Kazi and Biplab Hossain.

Meanwhile, the court ordered sending the other five accused - Mahmudul Hasan Mehdi, Mujahid Khan, Ashiq Sarkar, Hriday Sheikh, and Sohail Mollah- to jail.

Earlier on Monday, Hero Alam was physically assaulted while leaving a polling centre in Dhaka’s Banani area.

He was taken to a hospital in Rampura around 5:30 pm.

Following the assault, Hero Alam's assistant filed a case at Banani police station accusing 15 to 20 unidentified individuals of perpetrating the attack.

EC directs to take legal action against attackers 

in another development, the Election Commission (EC) directed the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner to take legal action against those responsible for beating the independent candidate for Dhaka-17 constituency polls Ashraful Hossain Alam, popularly known as Hero Alam, at the end of the election.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal gave the order over the phone to DMP Commissioner, said a press release.

The DMP Commissioner was asked to take strict legal action against the responsible persons after conducting an on-site investigation, reports BSS.

Ashraful Hossain Alam was reportedly attacked by some youths when he went to visit a polling centre in the Banani area just before the end of the Dhaka-17 constituency election on Monday.
