The Election Commission (EC) has set January 4 to hold afresh the by-polls to the Gaibandha-5 constituency that fell vacant following the death of deputy speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah.

“Voting in the by-election will be held on January 4 with the use of electronic voting machines,” EC Secretary Md Jahangir Alam told the media at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Earlier, the by-election was held on October 12, but the EC suspended it amid allegations of malpractices.

Later, a three-member committee was formed to look into the irregularities.

Following the recommendations of the committee, the commission took punitive actions against 133 officials, including an additional deputy commissioner.

EC Secretary Jahangir said that they will monitor all voting centres with CCTV cameras on the day of the election and candidates can start campaigning from today (Tuesday).

The candidates are — Awami League aspirant Mahmud Hasan Ripon, Jatiya Party candidate AHM Golam Shaheed Ranju, Bikalpa Dhara candidate Advocate Jahangir Alam, independent candidates Nahiduzzaman Nishad and Syed Mahbubur Rahman.
