GCC polls: EC satisfied with Azmat's explanation

The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday expressed satisfaction over the explanation given by Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Azmat Ullah Khan in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls regarding his alleged violation of the electoral code of conduct.

"We are satisfied with the explanation given by the mayoral candidate Azmat Ullah Khan... We are yet to take any decision," Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal told reporters.

As per a directive, Azmat came to the Election Commission office and gave his explanation for the alleged violation of the electoral codes.

CEC Habibul Awal said Azmat politely gave his explanation and expressed his regret promising to be respectful of the electoral code of conduct in future.

The Election Commission issued the show cause notice to Azmat, also the president of Gazipur city Awami League, for violating the electoral rules while submitting his nomination papers.

The CEC expressed the hope of developing an electoral culture in future by following the electoral code of conduct.

The Gazipur City Corporation election will be held on May 25.
