Actress Mahia Mahi on Sunday failed to get the nomination of Awami League (AL) for the upcoming by-polls of Chapainawabganj-2 constituency despite extensive deliberations.

The party has decided to nominate district AL acting president Ziaur Rahman for the seat.

Mahia Mahi still promised to work for AL in a live post on her Facebook and congratulated the new candidate.

“The by-polls of Chapainawabganj-2 constituency will be held on February 1. Ziaur has been nominated by AL for the seat. Best wishes to him. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will always make decisions for the benefit of the party that are in its best interests,” Mahia Mahi said.

“I must say to those who bought the nomination of the party — let us all work together for AL, make the boat win,” she added.

On December 29, 2022, Actress Mahiya Mahi collected an application form seeking AL’s nomination in the upcoming by-polls to Chapainawabganj-2 constituency, which became vacant after BNP lawmaker Aminul Islam’s resignation.

On December 11, five of the seven BNP lawmakers resigned as part of the party’s anti-government movement.

On the same day, Awami League General Secretary and Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said at a press conference that the party has approved Mahi’s move to collect a nomination form.

On October 27, Mahi revealed through a Facebook post that she has been assigned two posts in the Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote (Bangabandhu Cultural Alliance). She became the joint general secretary of the organisation’s central committee, and the convener of the Rajshahi division of the organisation for the next two years.

Mahi’s husband Rakib Sarkar is a Gazipur-based businessman and also an Awami League politician.
