School admission to all classes through lottery

Admission into class one to nine in all the government and non-government schools of the country will be taken via a lottery system, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni said.

She disclosed the matter at a virtual press briefing on Wednesday.

Details about the multiple steps of the admission procedure will be announced on 7 December, the minister said, adding that the procedure will end between January 10 and 15.

There is a lottery method for taking students in Class I each year and an enrollment exam for Class II to Class VIII.

It is dangerous, however, to take admission seekers to schools for written admission tests during the current Covid-19 situation. Which is why the government has agreed to carry out the admission process for all the classes through the lottery, the minister said.

Instead of 40 per cent, this year the catchment area will be 50 per cent. Each student will be able to select five schools in a lottery in the case of cluster-based entry.
