New Zealand Bangabandhu Parishad and Bangladesh Consulate have organised discussion meeting and cultural programmes on the occasion of Independence Day, Eid Reunion and Bengali New Year 1431 celebrations.

The events took place at Auckland Bangladesh Consulate Building on Saturday. At the beginning of the programme, the guests were greeted with panta, bharta, and fish on the occasion of Pahela Boishakh, followed by a discussion meeting and cultural programme.

New Zealand Bangabandhu Parishad President Dr Md Abdur Rashid presided over the programme, while General Secretary Engineer Afzalur Rahman Roni moderated the event.

Later, a discussion meeting and cultural event were held under the chairmanship of New Zealand Bangabandhu Parishad President Dr Md Abdur Rashid and General Secretary Engineer Afzalur Rahman Roni. The National Anthem of Bangladesh was sung first in this episode.

The national anthem of Bangladesh was sung in chorus at the beginning. Later, among the children, Arisa and Rishan recited poems, and the children present participated in a quiz competition on Bangladesh and Independence Day.

Poems were recited by Monisha Jahan Mila and on the occasion of Boishakh, while “Eso Hey Boishakh” was sung in ensemble voice along with renowned Rabindra Sangeet artiste Rani Aklima.

After that, the guests present exchanged Eid greetings with each other in their regional languages. This segment was moderated by Sarmen Seren Rodrigues.

Bangladesh Honorary Consul Engineer Shafiqur Rahman Bhuiyan (Anu) in Auckland, New Zealand, Mohammad Saiful Islam Khan, Zakir Hossain, Shekhar Gomez, and Architect Shaheen Haque spoke during the main discussion.

Speakers in the meeting highlighted the background of the great liberation war led by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the glory of great victory. The speakers emphasised on conveying the correct history of the liberation war to the new generation.

They commemorated the glorious past by celebrating Pahela Boishakh [the Bengali New Year], which is an integral part of Bengali culture.

In the closing speech, presiding over the event, Dr Md Abdur Rashid briefly shared his experience on March 25, 26 and 27 of 1971 in Dhaka.

He pointed out, “People should be careful about those who spread lies and misinformation about Bangladesh’s struggle from freedom, liberation war and great victory.

“As Pahela Boishakh is a universal festival for all Bengalis, the joy of Eid is cherished in our tradition of sharing with everyone.”

Syed GM Zulfikar Haider, Mirza Rakib, Mahbooba Aziz Khan, Elora Hussain, Monisha Jahan Mila, Sarmen Seren Rodrix and Shamama Shahreen all assisted in organising the event.

The event was attended by eminent people of the Bangladeshi community in New Zealand, their families and the new generation of Bangladeshis.
