The beginning of the Bengali New Year, the month of Baishakh, is a time of great colour and diversity. It starts with the vibrant festivities of the New Year celebrations followed by the scorching heat of summer and sometimes the storms of Kal Baishakh.

It was in this very month, the poet laureate Rabindranath Tagore, was born, enriching Bengali literature.

To mark the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, Swade Bangladesh is organising a 3-day festival (May 6-8) titled, ‘Rabindra Jayanti Utsav.’

Rabindranath reshaped Bengali literature and music as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Author of the "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful" poetry of Gitanjali, he became in 1913 the first non-European and the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The festival will be a celebration of Bengali cuisine, with a special focus on traditional Baishakhi dishes. It will culminate on May 8 with a cultural program featuring the songs and poems of esteemed poets.
