In an announcement, Warner Bros. has disclosed plans for a fresh instalment in the “Lord of the Rings” cinematic universe, with the spotlight firmly fixed on the enigmatic character of Gollum.

Set to hit screens in 2026, this live-action feature will delve into the untold stories surrounding Andy Serkis' iconic portrayal of the tortured creature.

The project, titled "Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum," sees original trilogy filmmaker Peter Jackson, alongside his esteemed partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, taking the reins as producers. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav affirmed their integral involvement, promising fans an immersive journey through Tolkien's rich narrative, according to Variety.

Script development is currently underway, with Walsh and Boyens collaborating with writers Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou to explore uncharted territories within Middle-earth. Serkis, who not only directs but also reprises his role as Gollum, expressed his excitement for the venture, emphasising the commitment to honouring Tolkien's legacy.

This endeavour marks a continuation of Warner Bros.' expansive vision for the franchise, following a deal brokered in 2023 under studio leaders Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy. With New Line Cinema spearheading development, audiences can anticipate a reinvigorated exploration of Tolkien's beloved works.

Moreover, alongside this forthcoming live-action endeavour, fans can anticipate another cinematic offering in the form of an animated feature titled "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim," slated for release on December 13. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, this film serves as a prequel, delving into events preceding "The Hobbit."

Reflecting on the enduring legacy of the original trilogy, De Luca and Abdy emphasized the dedication of Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens to preserving Tolkien's vision.

"We are honored they have agreed to be our partners on these two new films," they stated, "With Andy coming aboard to direct 'Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,' we continue an important commitment to excellence that is a true hallmark of how we all want to venture ahead and further contribute to the 'Lord of the Rings' cinematic history."

In response, Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens conveyed their enthusiasm for revisiting the mythical realm alongside Serkis, highlighting their shared passion for Tolkien's mythology. "It is an honor and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth," they affirmed, "As lifelong fans of Professor Tolkien’s vast mythology, we are proud to be working with Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy, and the entire team at Warner Bros. on another epic adventure!"

Serkis, echoing their sentiments, eagerly anticipated the reunion, underscoring the collaborative efforts with Warner Bros. and the filmmaking family in New Zealand. "The time has come once more to venture into the unknown," he proclaimed, "With my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle Earth Peter, Fran, and Philippa."

The original "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, a monumental cinematic achievement, amassed nearly $3 billion worldwide and garnered critical acclaim, culminating in numerous Academy Awards, including Best Picture for "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." As anticipation builds for this latest cinematic venture, fans can expect another immersive journey into the heart of Middle-earth.
