Students who had blocked the capital's Shahbagh for the second day demanding cancellation of the quota system on Wednesday, are leaving the area after an hour and half blockade, after announcing new demonstrations.

Nahid Islam, coordinator of Boishommo Birodhi Chattrra Andolon, announced a new set of programmes at Shahbagh, adding that the students will stand in front of the central library of Dhaka University on Thursday at 11am with the same demand.

He said, “We want to make it clear that in the hearing regarding the quota that will be held Thursday in the Appellate Division, will be in favor of the students. The first of the four points should be fulfilled by tomorrow, and the rest should follow.

Nahid pointed out, “Our movement has been going on since the High Court verdict on June 5. We had given an ultimatum, but no action was taken. So we had to take to the streets yet again.

“Tomorrow at 11am, we will take a position in front of the Dhaka University central library, and continue our movement until the verdict comes in our favor.”

Students of different universities and colleges of Dhaka blocked Shahbagh intersection for the 2nd day on Wednesday protesting the reinstatement of quota system in government jobs.

Several thousand students from Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Dhaka College, Eden College, and other colleges joined the demonstration that disrupted transport movement at Shahbagh and adjacent areas.

People from all walks of life suffered immensely due to traffic gridlock caused by disruption in vehicular movement in the busy area.
