Grandmaster Zia passes away while playing chess

Chess Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman (50), the highest FIDE-rated chess player in Bangladesh, has passed away during a match after falling ill.

After collapsing during the 12th round of the national tournament against Grandmaster Enamul Hossain around 6pm on Friday, he was taken to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital in Dhaka

International Arbiter Md Haroon or Rashid told reporters, “We took him to the hospital within 10 minutes after he had collapsed, but he could not be saved.”

Zia was born on May 1, 1974, and he has been playing chess since his childhood. He became a FIDE Master in 1990, an International Master in 1993, and Grandmaster in 2002. After graduating from the anthropology department at University of Dhaka, he began a chess career.
