Govt to procure 30,692 tonnes of Boro rice in Jashore

The government has set a target to procure 30,692 tonnes of rice form eight upazilas of the district during the current Boro season.

Procurement of Boro rice has started in all the eight upazilas of the district on 7th May with the main thrust of facilitating the farmers to get fair price of the newly harvested food grain, reports BSS.

District Food Controller Md Sefaur Rahman said that rice is being procured directly from the registered contract millers at the price fixed by the government. 

He said the government has fixed a target to procure a total of 30,692 tonnes of rice in the district this season.

Of the total volume, 9,708 tonnes of rice will be procured in Sadar upazila, 2,217 tonnes in Monirampur upazila, 928 tonnes in Keshabpur upazila, 6,062 tonnes in Abhaynagar upazila, 1,034 tonnes in Jhikargachha upazila, 8,068 tonnes in Sharsha upazila, 1,034 tonnes in Bagherpara upazila and 1,239 tonnes in Chowgacha upazila of the district, sources said.

Boro rice is being procured at a rate Tk 45 per kg. The collection drive has started on May 7 and it will continue till August 31.

According to the sources of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), the target of Boro paddy cultivation in the district this year was 1,60,500 hectares of land, but it was cultivated on 1,60,675 hectares of land.

The District Food Controller said that a massive publicity campaign has been conducted so that the registered mill owners can sell rice directly to the government food warehouse at the price fixed by the government.
