BAT Bangladesh Manikganj plant gears up for AWS certification

The re-drying plant of BAT Bangladesh in Manikganj has steadfastly progressed towards AWS (Alliance for Water Stewardship) certification, a testament to the company’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and fostering good water governance.

Upon certification, BAT Bangladesh will achieve a significant milestone by securing such accreditation for all its factories, read a press release issued on July 18.

Established in 2001, the re-drying plant of BAT Bangladesh is planning to adopt Alliance for Water Stewardship standards and avail the core certification this year.

Upon successful completion, BAT Bangladesh’s all manufacturing sites namely Dhaka Factory, Savar Factory, Green Leaf Threshing Plant and Re-drying plant will hold AWS Core Certification.

The re-drying plant is currently going above and beyond to ensure compliance through the completion of the AWS Standard and the focused outcomes. The company is working collaboratively with all stakeholders, promoting transparency, raising awareness, sharing best practices, and fostering good water governance.

In identifying shared water challenges, the approach has been instrumental, establishing mitigation plans, and ensuring water availability in its catchments. It’s not just the company but the collective efforts of all the stakeholders that are driving progress.

As per BAT Bangladesh, Water Stewardship involves equitable, sustainable, and economical water usage. The company aims to achieve numerous sustainability goals, like decreasing water withdrawal by 35 per cent and increasing water recycling to 30 per cent by 2025.

To attain such targets, the company has implemented many initiatives and optimised its processes through the collaborative efforts of its engineering and sustainability teams.

A condensate recovery system has already been installed at the re-drying plant in Manikganj, which is expected to contribute to 24 per cent water recycling rate in 2024, further decreasing water withdrawal.

The site also targets a 35 per cent reduction in water withdrawal in alignment with the company’s 2025 goals. The re-drying plant has a strong water management system in place, with adherence to these processes monitored regularly.

The company has also established procedures to address any violations of these practices.

BAT Bangladesh is dedicated to building a network of cooperation and assistance with public and private organisations to tackle shared water challenges. The dedication reflects the company’s belief in continuous self-improvement, collective growth, and shaping a better future through sustainable actions today.
