RMG factories shut indefinitely

In response to the escalating violence which has tragically claimed at least 91 lives, Bangladesh's apparel factories have announced an indefinite shutdown.

The decision has been confirmed to The Business Post by Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Director Md Ashikur Rahman Tuhin, and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) Executive President Fazlee Shamim Ehsan.

This measure aims to ensure the safety of workers as Ehsan stated, “Running factories has become untenable due to the widespread chaos caused by the clashes. Both our workers and we feel unsafe under these conditions. Therefore, we have decided to close the factories indefinitely until further notice. We urge all our workers to remain at their home, as their safety is our top priority.”

Meanwhile, Tuhin issued a press statement, stating, “Amid the current situation, we urge our members to close their factories until further notice to ensure the safety and security of our workers.”

Additionally, BGMEA President SM Mannan Kochi claimed to The Business Post that the closure of factories is resulting in direct daily loss of Tk 1,600 crore, with indirect losses far exceeding this amount.

He urged the protesters to exclude the RMG sector from their non-cooperation movement, emphasising the impact on the country's economy and employment.

Previously, factories had been shut for four days during the initial phase of the unrest. During this period, the Buyers’ Forum, representing Bangladeshi brands, expressed deep concern over the ongoing turmoil and the resulting casualties.
