Toll hits 8 as Bangladesh grapples with massive floods

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, millions of people in 260 unions of 40 upazilas of Chattogram and Sylhet divisions have been affected by unprecedented flash floods. 

The disaster has marooned 3.6 million people, and 8 people have so far been reported killed. However, it is not yet known how many people are missing. Hundreds of thousands of people's homes and crops have become submerged.

Press secretary to the chief adviser Shafiqul Alam made the disclosures at a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy on Thursday. In addition, the health ministry has given this information in a notification.

According to the notification, enough water purification tablets are available in flood-affected areas and hospitals. Emergency medical teams have kept enough oral saline, cholera saline and anti-venom and other medicines as well. 

The leave of all health workers and officials in the affected areas has been canceled. Divisional Director (Health), Civil Surgeon and Upazila Health and Family Welfare Officers have been instructed to work in coordination with other departments. Instructions have also been given to take advance preparations in case of deterioration of the situation through continuous monitoring of the flood situation.

It also said that a flood control room has been opened in the Department of Health (contact mobile number 01759114488) through which all health facilities in the country are connected around the clock.

Besides, control rooms are functioning in the offices of the civil surgeons and divisional directors (Health). 

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Directorate of Health under the direction of the Health Adviser are monitoring and coordinating the overall response to the flood situation.

So far eight people have died due to drowning and electrocution in various places. Among them, four people died in Cumilla, two in Cox's Bazar, one in Feni and one in Brahmanbaria.
