Asif warns of dire consequences if coup attempted

Students clashed with Ansar personnel on Sunday night when they blockaded the Bangladesh Secretariat. At least 40 people, including Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of Boishommo Birodhi Chhatra Andolon, have been injured.

Asif Mahmud, sports adviser to the interim government and another key coordinator of the movement, referred to the incident as “Ansar Coup,” and warned of dire consequences if any such move is attempted in the coming days.

Giving the warning in a status posted on his Facebook account late Sunday night, Adviser Asif Mahmud said, “No conspiracy will be enough to defeat the uprising of students.

“Take into heed the examples of judicial coup, and misguided Ansar coup. If you are not careful, you will have to face dire consequences.”

Thousands of Ansar members started protesting in front of the secretariat on Sunday morning. They later blockaded the Secretariat from 12pm. Even though the office closed at 5pm, the officials could not leave the premises before 10:30pm.

The students of Dhaka University headed for the secretariat after learning about the detention of Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, two coordinators of the Boishommo Birodhi Chhatra Andolon.

At that time Ansar personnel chased the students and beat some of them with sticks. Later, they fled when the students pelted bricks and chased them. Later that night, the situation came under control with the help of the Army and students.
