Due to heavy downpour in India's Bihar and Jharkhand regions, the neighbouring country on Monday opened all the gates of Farakka Barrage to handle the water pressure. This move can however put several districts of Bangladesh at risk of flooding.
The gates were opened on Monday, allowing 1.1 million cusecs of water to flow into Bangladesh in a single day, reports Indian media News18.
Farakka Barrage is built on the river Ganges. It is located in the Murshidabad and Malda districts of the Indian state of West Bengal. The Ganges River enters Bangladesh as Padma through the Chapainawabganj district.
As a result, the Farakka water flow will enter Bangladesh through the Ganges and Padma and flood the regions along the banks of River Padma.
The water released by Farakka may cause flooding in Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi, Natore, Pabna, Sirajganj, Kushtia, Rajbari, Manikganj, Faridpur, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Munshiganj and Chandpur.
It should be noted that after the opening of Dumboor and Ghazaldoba dams by India, floods have occurred in Feni, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Cumilla and Chattogram regions of Bangladesh.
