MoPME needs Tk33cr to renovate schools

The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education (MoPME) needs Tk 33 crore to repair and upgrade government primary schools severely affected by the recent massive floods across various regions of the country.

Primary and Mass Education Ministry Adviser Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar on Tuesday discussed the damage to primary schools across the country caused by the recent floods during a meeting with other ministry officials at the secretariat.

During the meeting, they discussed about the damages and possible initiatives to make the schools prepare for regular academic activities

The primary and mass education ministry reported that the recent flood caused damage to at least 2,799 government primary schools and resulted in the destruction of 1,15,823 textbooks.

According to the ministry, the Noakhali district was the hardest hit by the flood, with the highest number of affected schools, totaling 763. Other affected areas include Laximpur with 501 schools damaged, Feni with 550, Brahmanbaria with 22, Cumilla with 523, Chandpur with 169, Chattogram with 164, Moulvibazar with 77, Sylhet with eight, and Habiganj with 22. Notably, no schools were damaged in Khagrachari.

Additionally, a total of 946 learning centres were damaged across 18 upazilas in the Noakhali, Cumilla, Feni, and Lakshmipur districts.

Adviser Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar said, “We have already taken necessary initiatives to restructure the damaged institutions on emergency basis. I believe we can recover the losses soon.”

During the meeting, the ministry officials said that the ministry will provide dress as well as school bags to each student of the affected areas. The ministry has asked the filed level officials to send the list of the students as early as possible.

The school authorities also have been asked to take initiatives to clean each school before reopening.
