219 factories shut in Savar amid workers’ unrest

Production in 219 factories remained suspended since Thursday morning as workers in some factories continued to strike and authorities of some other factories declared a holiday due to unrest.

Of the total factories, the authorities concerned suspended production in 86 factories while the authorities concerned in 133 factories declared a general holiday for today to avert trouble.

However, productions in some 88 factories in the Dhaka EPZ area are going on in full swing.

Sarwar Alam, superintendent of Industrial police-1, said no road blockade or demonstrations had been reported till the filing of this report around 4 pm.

There was no report of vandalism as well, he said.

Meanwhile, additional police were deployed in front of the factories to avoid further trouble.

On Wednesday, some 50 factories were declared closed due to workers’ protests and a holiday was proclaimed in all factories in the Bypile and Jirabo areas of Savar following unrest in garment industries over the reinstatement of jobs.

On September 9, the authorities declared a general holiday in 79 factories while 40 on September 10 and 70 on September 11.
