A court on Friday placed police inspector Mazharul Islam on a five-day remand in the case lodged over the murder of Lord Hardinge Fazil Degree Madrasah student Arif in capital's Jatrabari area on July 19.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tahmina Haque passed the order as police produced Mazharul before the court and pleaded to place him on a 10-day remand in the case, reports BSS.

Mazharul was arrested from Armed Police Special Training Centre in Khagrachari on September 17.

Mazharul was posted at Jatrabari Police Station during the recent anti-discrimination student movement and was allegedly instrumental in carrying out indiscriminate shooting on the protesters in Jatrabari Kutubkhali area. Madrasah student Arif was shot in his eye and succumbed to his injuries on July 19.

Arif's father Md Eusuf later filed the case with Jatrabari Police Station.
