Bangladesh and China will foster stronger ties in technology transfer and skills development, experts said at a North South University (NSU) programme titled “Dhaka China Day 2024” jointly organised by the Embassy of China in Bangladesh and NSU on Tuesday.

As the chief guest, Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hussain, adviser to the Ministry of Textiles and Jute and the Ministry of Shipping, graced the event, read a press release.

Ambassador of the Embassy of China to Bangladesh Yao Wen, and NSU Board of Trustees Chairman Azim Uddin Ahmed joined as special guests.

Other dignitaries included members of the NSU Board of Trustees Yasmin Kamal and Aziz Al Kaise, Treasurer and acting Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdur Rob Khan, and Director of the Confucius Institute at NSU Ma Xioyan.

The session was chaired by NSU Vice Chancellor Prof Abdul Hannan Chowdhury.

In his opening remarks, NSU Confucius Institute Director Dr Bulbul Siddiqi said, “Bangladesh and China share a deep-rooted history of friendship.

“Today’s event marks a significant milestone in strengthening our cultural and educational ties, and we are proud to host the first-ever Dhaka-China Day celebration at NSU.”

Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hussain stated, “China has been one of Bangladesh’s closest friends for a long time, and our relationship has grown stronger over the years. There are many more ways we can work together.

“I encourage the Chinese Ambassador to explore partnership opportunities in the jute sector, which is very important for Bangladesh's economy.”

Yao Wen said, “Cultural exchange is a bridge that brings people closer together. Bangladesh and China already share a rich cultural heritage. Through festivals like Dhaka China Day, we can deepen our ties and foster a new era of collaboration and friendship between our countries.”

Prof Abdul Hannan Chowdhury said, “As the first university in Bangladesh to establish a Confucius Institute, we have built a strong partnership with China. Our student exchange programs with Chinese universities are thriving, and we are excited to expand our cooperation in areas such as skills development and technological innovation.”

The day’s highlights included cultural performances headlined by a troupe from Yunnan, China. Students from NSU, the Confucius Institute at NSU, the Confucius Institute at Dhaka University, and the Bangladesh Wushu Federation also delivered stunning performances.

Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed Chinese cultural experiences at the NSU Plaza areas, where booths showcased traditional Chinese crafts, cuisine, and cultural exhibits.
