Swechhasebak League leader arrested in Ashraful murder case

Police arrested an Awami Swechhasebak League (ASL) central leader from the Mirpur area last night on charges of his alleged involvement in the killing of Md Ashraful Islam during the anti-discrimination student movement.

The arrestee is identified as Tarique Afzal Sabuj, a central leader of the Swechhasebak League, reports BSS.

Inspector (investigation) of Mirpur Model thana Md Sazzad Ramon confirmed the news, saying police conducted a raid on a nearby area last night and arrested Awami Swechhasebak League central leader, who is on the list of FIR.

He said a case was registered with Mirpur Model Thana on September 22 in connection with the murder of Md Ashraful Islam.

According to the FIR, on August 4, 2024, Ashraful Islam joined the anti-discrimination student movement in the Mirpur-2 area, while leaders and workers of different organisations of Awami League fired indiscriminately at the protesters to stop the movement. 

During the attacks, Md Ashraful Islam received severe wounds. Later, Ashraful was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, it said.

Inspector of Mirpur Model Thana also said police arrested Tarique Afzal Sabuj after investigating and analysing the CCTV footage.

He said that police also took support of the information technology during the investigation.
