DU to provide health insurance to students

Dhaka University (DU) authorities have decided to bring all its students under health insurance.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Deans’ Committee chaired by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman on Tuesday (June 2).

DU public relations department confirmed the matter in a press release.

Student health insurance, sustainable development goals and education curriculum development were discussed in the meeting.

A six-member committee was formed to formulate a policy in this regard to ensure affordable medical facilities for DU students at different hospitals, the press release said.

The members of the committee are Prof Tofayel Ahmed, dean of science faculty; Prof Muhammad Abdul Moyeen, acting dean of business studies faculty; Prof Shahriar Nabi, dean of medicine faculty; Prof Syed Abdul Hamid of the Institute of Health Economics; and Prof Hasina Sheykh of the banking and insurance department.

This insurance program would play an important role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a good position in rankings, the teachers present at the meeting hoped.

The teachers also hoped that this health insurance would help develop health consciousness among students and become responsible graduates and good citizens.

It also directed the departments to determine how to achieve 17 goals and 169 targets of SDGs and submit the suggestions to the office of the registrar by June 30.

The meeting also requested the concerned to take appropriate measures to continue online classes.

Deans and directors of the different faculties and institutes were asked to write to the registrar stating their limitations.

It was also decided in the meeting to reassess the number of student intake considering the capacity of the department and the national and international needs in order to improve the quality of education in the university.
