No textbooks under new curriculum next year

The government has decided not to distribute textbooks under a new curriculum in the coming academic year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rather, students will get the textbooks under the new curriculum from 2022.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Education Minister Dipu Moni at the International Mother Language Institute in the capital on Tuesday, confirmed Narayan Chandra Saha, chairman of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB).

State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Md Zakir Hossain and Deputy Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel were also present at the meeting.

The NCTB chairman said it will not be possible to deliver books under a new curriculum in 2021 because of the pandemic; so students will get the textbooks under the existing curriculum next year.

However, a guideline will be given to the teachers next year under the new curriculum so that they can hint students about the upcoming curriculum, said Prof Narayan Chandra Saha.

The government earlier decided to distribute textbooks under a new curriculum from 2021 for students of class I, class II, and class VI.

Students of classes III, IV, VII, IX and XI will be brought under the new curriculum in 2022, and students of classes V, VIII, X and XII in 2023.

As per the new curriculum, the government is planning to introduce a uniform curriculum for the secondary level of education by abolishing the existing grouping system. Once implemented, all students will get opportunity to choose group or section in Class XI (college level) after strengthening their base through achieving education on same subjects up to Class X.
