Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan dragged himself into a fresh controversy by kicking the stumps at bowler’s end after his appeal for a leg-before out was turned down by umpire during a Dhaka Premier League match in Mirpur on Friday.

The incident happened during a match involving arch foes Abahani Limited and Mohammedan Sporting Club when Mohammedan captain Shakib appealed for lbw against Abahani’s Mushfiqur Rahim in the last ball of the fifth over and was rejected by umpire Imran Parvez.

A furious Shakib not only kicked the stumps and but engaged in a heated conversation with the on-field umpire.

It was not the only controversial behaviour of Shakib in the game as, during the batting of his side, he made a hand gesture to indicate to the square-leg umpire that Abahani spinner Arafat Sunny was chucking.

The situation aggravated further when the umpires stopped the play for rain after 5.5 overs, leaving Shakib furious. Angry at the decision, Shakib rushed to the pitch and uprooted the stumps and threw it away.

While returning to the dressing room, he also made an indecent gesture towards Abahani players, which enraged Abahani coach Khaled Mahmud, who attempted to rush towards the Mohammedan cricketers but was stopped by Shamsur Rahman.

Mohammedan beat Abahani by 31 runs under Duckworth/Lewis Method in the rain-interrupted Twenty20 match.

Batting first, Mohammedan scored 145-6 in 20 overs before Abahani reached 31-3 in 5.5 overs when rain interrupted the play.

When play resumed Abahani were given a revised target of 76 runs from nine overs, meaning that they have to score 45 runs from 19 balls to win the match against archrivals. But the defending champions could reach only 44-6 after 9 overs.

Shakib apologised immediately after the match on social media platforms accounts to seek an apology for his outrageous actions, which read,

“I am extremely sorry for losing for my temper and ruining the match for everyone and especially those who are watching from home,” Shakib said on his verified Facebook page.

“An experienced player like me should not have reacted that way but sometimes against all odds it happens, unfortunately. I apologise to the teams, management, tournament officials, and organising committee for this human error. Hopefully, I won't be repeating this again in the future. Thanks and love you all,” he said.

Cricket Committee of Dhaka of Metropolis Kazi Inam Ahmed promised to look into the matter.

“It is unfortunate. But we expect that the players will keep their emotions under control,” Inam told reporters.

“Like an international game, this is a ‘List A’ game. We have our players' control team which is the match- referee and umpires. We are expecting that they will give a report. There are rules and we will act accordingly.”

CCDM earlier spared Shakib with caution for breaking bio-security bubble in the same competition.
