Forty-one apparel factories in Bangladesh have secured platinum certification of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and 102 got gold and silver-rated certification.

Around 500 more apparel factories are waiting to be certified by the US Green Building Council as green factory buildings, said the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association.

“We have invested huge fund for improving security and safety purposes and now we achieved worldwide acclaim,” said the association president Faruque Hasan at a virtual press conference.

The Green Building Council on Friday announced the names of the awardees from around the world.

They got the award for innovations in sustainability for healthy, equitable, and resilient buildings and communities.

“After some of the unexpected accidents of the garments industry, we took a challenge for restructuring. In the last decade or so, tireless work of entrepreneurs, spending cores of takas for security purposes, Bangladesh’s garments industry became a role model in the world. Our achievement is now acclaimed worldwide,” said Faruque.

“We are partnering with Global Fashion Agenda, Reverse Resources and p4g and developed ‘Circular Fashion Partnership’. The platform started to develop a feasible business model to implement the circular economy in the sector and closing the loop,” he said.

The BGMEA, being the only association in Bangladesh, has published its own ‘Sustainability Reporting’ based on GRI guideline, he said adding that 47 of our member factories have published SDGs report partnering the SDGs coordinator under the Prime Minister’s Office the and UNDP,” he added.

He said the report also mentioned that more than 1,500 Bangladeshi companies were certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard, the second-highest number in any country in the world, he added.
