Shataranji or handcrafted rug has been recognised as a Geographical Indication product of Bangladesh by the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks.

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun handed over the certificate issued by the department of patents to Chairman of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation, Mushtaq Hasan, on Thursday.

The minister handed over the certificate while addressing as the chief guest at a seminar titled “Realizing the Dream of the Father of the Nation for the Intellectual Property" ahead of the International Intellectual Property Day. The event was organised by the DPDT on Thursday afternoon.

The GI recognition of ‘Shataranji of Rangpur’ was published in the GI Journal No-07 in November in 2020 by the Department of Bangladesh Forms and Publications Office.

On July 11, authorities concerned applied to the DPDT for registration of Shatranji as a geographical indication product.
