Food delivery platform foodpanda has trained the first batch of its transgender riders and equipped them with bicycles and smartphones in collaboration with TransEnd, an organisation dedicated to empower Bangladeshi transgender community.

A training completion ceremony was held at foodpanda hub office in Chattogram on Thursday where the gears were distributed among the riders, said a media release.

On-demand food and grocery delivery platform, foodpanda is working towards building a more inclusive environment for transgender individuals nationwide.

As part of this initiative, foodpanda has trained the riders for several weeks and has furnished them with proper delivery gear so that they can work proudly and independently as foodpanda riders.

Initially, 20 riders have been taken onboard in Chattogram and Dhaka.

Additionally, several other members of the transgender community have already been working as warehouse staff in foodpanda’s pandamart dark stores.

TransEnd has facilitated the process and supported foodpanda in hiring and training the riders.

Finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in his budget speech proposed tax rebates for organisations employing 10 per cent transgender employees or 100 third gender employees.

Rights groups welcomed the proposal and urged the government to ensure that it is implemented properly.
