BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia got back home on Saturday night from the capital’s Evercare Hospital after 54 days of treatment for Covid infections and other physical complications.
She was discharged from the hospital around 8:10pm as per the advice of the medical board formed for her treatment.
The BNP chief reached her Gulshan residence, Feroza, around 8:35pm.
“The medical board has decided to discharge Madam (Khaleda) from the hospital as her condition improved,” BNP chief’s personal physician Mohammad Al Mamun told UNB.
Mamun said Khaleda’s personal medical team members will provide her treatment at her residence for her underlying health complications.
Earlier in the day, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir went to the hospital and talked to the doctors about her health condition and release.
On Thursday, Fakhrul urged the government to allow Khaleda Zia receive advanced treatment abroad claiming that she was in a vulnerable condition with various old health complications.
According to the BNP chairperson's personal security guards, her residence was cleaned in the morning as they got information about her return to the house.
The 76-year-old BNP chief, who tested positive for Covid-19 on April 11, was admitted to Evercare Hospital on April 27.
On April 28, a 10-member medical board, headed by Shahabuddin Talukder, was formed for the treatment of Khaleda.
She tested negative for Covid-19 on May 8, 27 days after she had been infected with the deadly virus, but the BNP chief was staying in the hospital for treatment for various comorbidities and post-Covid complications.
Her family submitted an application to the government on May 6 seeking permission to send her abroad for advanced treatment, but it was turned down.
Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the government freed Khaleda Zia from jail for six months through an executive order suspending her sentences on March 25 last year.
