A Supreme Court lawyer has filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directive on the authorities concerned of the government to stop collecting tuition fees from students of the schools and colleges registered under the monthly payment order (MPO) facility, due to socio-economic condition of parents caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Advocate Saifur Rahman very recently filed the writ petition on behalf of the parents of two students of Ideal School and College in Dhaka. He, however, disclosed the matter to journalists on Monday.

Secretary of the Ministry of Education, director general (DG) of the Department of Education, chairmen of all education boards in the country (secondary and higher), and principal of the Ideal School and College have been made respondents to the petition.

The petitioner said a legal notice was served to the defendants on May 19 to take necessary steps to suspend collecting monthly fees from the students of all MPO-listed institutions.

As the authorities concerned have not taken any action so far, Advocate Saifur Rahman said, he has filed the writ petition.
