BIWTC forms 4-member probe committee over ferry accident

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has formed a four-member committee to investigate the collision of Ro-Ro ferry named Shahjalal with the pillar of the Padma bridge.

The committee has been asked to submit its report to the BIWTC chairman within three days, according to a BIWTC order issued here today.

BIWTC Director (commercial) S M Ashikuzzaman has made the convener of the probe committee.

Other members are: BIWTA director M Shahjahan, BIWTC assistant general manager Ahmed Ali and BIWTC assistant general manager Rubeluzzaman.

Earlier, a Ro-Ro ferry named Shahjalal on the Shimulia-Banglabazar route on Padma River hit the Pillar No. 17 of the Padma Bridge at around 9:30 am today as the master lost control over the ferry resulting in at least 20 people injured.

Later, BIWTC today temporarily suspended the master as he failed to operate the ferry properly.
