The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has decided to convert some parts of the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery as Corona unit to treat the coronavirus infected people as the disease shows a surge in transmission in the country.

"We are preparing the hospital for treating the coronavirus infected people. We hope to start the admission of Covid-19 patients soon," Director of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Dr Abul Kalam told The Business Post.

Despite health ministry's previous ventures for converting the institute for coronavirus treatment, the initiative backtracked in each and every occasion.

Finally, in a regular bulletin of the Directorate General of Health Services on June 22, it was decided to provide Covid-19 treatment in the institute and preparations are going on accordingly, said the authorities.

In an interview with The Business Post on Wednesday, Dr Kalam said, "In line with the instructions of the health ministry, we are now preparing two wards in the 8th and 9th floors to treat the coronavirus infected people."

"In the two wards 50 patients would have been provided treatment," Dr Kalam added.

The 500-bed Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery was built in the capital area to facilitate treatment for the burned people.

"We remain very careful so that the coronavirus infection doesn't spread elsewhere in the hospital as we deal with patients with sensitive burn injuries," said Dr Kalam.
