Multinational companies hold 27pc market cap at DSE

The listed multinational companies have been playing a crucial role in keeping the Bangladeshi capital market vibrant as their collective contribution to the market capitalisation of the Dhaka Stock Exchange stood at 27.66 per cent.

Thirteen multinationals companies are now active at the trading floors of the DSE.

Market capitalisation, or market cap, is calculated by multiplying the total number of a company’s outstanding shares with the current market price of shares.

The market cap of the Dhaka bourse hit an all-time high of Tk 5,86,319 crore on September 9, while the figure was Tk 3,50,800 crore in December, 2010.

In the past 11 years, the market cap at the premiere bourse rose by 67 per cent or Tk 2,35,519 crore.

However, the market cap declined to Tk 5,74,475 crore on Thursday, the last trading session of previous week.

Grameenphone (GP) contributed 10.03 per cent to the DSE market cap, which is highest among the multinational companies. Currently, the telecommunication company holds a market cap of Tk 51.919 crore, as per the latest DSE data.

GP got listed with the Dhaka bourse in 2009. It has a paid-up capital of Tk 1,350 crore.

British American Tobacco Bangladesh (BATBC), a multinational tobacco company, turned out to be the second highest market cap MNC at the Dhaka bourse.

Its market cap stood at Tk 35,434 crore on Thursday, contributing 6.8 per cent to the total market cap of the DSE.

The multinational company's paid-up capital is Tk 540 crore. Each share of the company was traded at Tk 656.2 on Thursday.

The BATBC was followed by Robi Axiata Limited, another telecommunication service providing company.

Its contribution to the DSE market cap is 4.24 per cent. Currently the company has a market cap of Tk 21,946 crore.

Capital market analysts attributed the MNCs’ high performance to their efficiency, time-befitting business strategy, good corporate governance, strong ethical standards, and transparency in financial statements.

Among other multinational companies, Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited holds 1.6 per cent of the DSE's total market-cap. Its share price closed at Tk 1,841 on Thursday.

LafargeHolcim Bangladesh Limited was holding 1.7 per cent of the Dhaka bourse’s total market cap as of Thursday.

Besides, Marico Bangladesh Limited grabbed 1.4 per cent market-cap of the Dhaka Stock Exchange.

The other companies are - Unilever Consumer Care, Heidelberg Cement Bangladesh, RAK Ceramics (Bangladesh), Reckitt Benckiser (Bd.), Singer Bangladesh, and Bata Shoe Company (Bangladesh) Limited.

Unilever, Heidelberg Cement, and RAK Ceramics respectively have 0.7 per cent, 0.4 per cent, and 0.4 per cent contributions to the market cap.

Apart from those, Reckitt Benckiser, Singer Bangladesh, and Bata Shoe captured 0.04 per cent, 0.4 per cent, and 0.2 per cent of the total figure, according to statistics available from the DSE.
