Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has been made president of the Commonwealth Finance Ministers meeting 2022.

A virtual meeting of Commonwealth Finance Ministers and high-level delegates from 54 Commonwealth countries elected Kamal on 12 October on the sidelines of the World Bank-IMF Annual Meeting-2021.

Mustafa Kamal at the meeting said, “I firmly believe that through concerted efforts, Commonwealth countries can achieve greater socio-economic prosperity through inter-Commonwealth trade and investment, knowledge, technology and the sharing of good practices.”

He informed the meeting that Bangladesh in the past decade has seen a 7.4 per cent economic growth. Even during the Covid-19 pandemic last year when the global economy shrunk by 3 per cent, Bangladesh is among the top five tolerant economies according to several international organisations’ surveys, he said.

The minister added that the International Conference on Sustainable Development 2021, held at the UN General Assembly last month, recognised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and awarded her the SDG Progress Award in recognition of the efforts towards development.

With Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne in the chair, Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland and others present the meeting shed light on credits for sustainable economic recovery from Covid-19 fallout. They also focused on minimum global tax agreements to tackle the threat of climate change.
