BIDA to inspect 1,350 factories

Bangladesh Investment Development Authority has formed 27 teams to inspect 1,350 factories in three months to ensure a safe work environment. BIDA detailed the activities of the teams on Wednesday in a circular.

Fifteen teams will inspect 750 factories in Dhaka district while nine teams will inspect 450 factories in Naryanganj. Three teams will inspect 150 factories in Gazipur.

BIDA will coordinate the inspection of all the teams and take necessary action based on the findings.

Every team will inspect 50 factories by the next three months following Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) after the issuance of a gazette notification.

Each team will inspect factories based on a priority list prepared considering risks and send a checklist to the factory management three days before its inspection, the circular said.

The teams have to file the inspection reports (both soft and hard copies) within three days of their inspection. On the other hand, they will have to update the checklist regularly, it added.

The move to inspect factories came following the fire incident at Hashem Foods factory that killed 52 people and injured over 50 others.

In making the initiative effective, representatives from the Department of Inspection Factories and Establishment (DIFE), Fire Service and Civil Defense Department, Department of Environment (DoE), Office of The Chief Inspector of Boilers, Department of Explosives, Office of the Chief Electric Inspector, Titas Gas, Department of Public Works, district administration, Department of Architecture and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) have been included in the team.
