BGAPMEA goes to polls on Nov 6

The maiden election to Bangladesh Garments Accessories and Packaging Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGAPMEA) will be held on November 6.

They will exercise their voting rights for the first time to elect five directors from the Chattogram region.

Out of 21 directors required to form the board of directors of the trade body, 16 directors from the Dhaka region have been elected uncontested, according to a meeting of the organisation held on October 16. 

M Mozaharul Haque Shahid, managing director of Bismillah Industries Ltd, is expected to be elected as the BGAPMEA president unopposed, said one of the candidates.

A total of 12 candidates from Chattogram region will compete for the posts of five directors. 

“Mozaharul Haque Shahid is our next president. We did not hold any elections before. Fifty-six candidates were showed interest to participate in the election, but most of them withdrew their nomination papers except from the Chattogram region,”  BGAPMEA President Abdul Kader Khan told The Business Post.

As per the organogram of the BGAPMEA, the general members will form a 21-member board of directors every two years through a direct voting system. Then, the elected board of directors will elect a president, a first vice-president and three vice-presidents.

As many as 1,800 members of the association are eligible to vote.

A three-member election board led by Md Abdur Razzaqe has been formed to conduct the polls. M Kawsaruzzaman and Md Ismail Chowdhury Badal are members of the election board. 

On November 13, the elected 21 directors will select the president, first vice-president, and three vice-presidents.

“We did not feel any pressure to withdraw our nomination papers. The candidates from the Chattogram region showed interest to elect their board of directors through the election and we welcome them. It proves that everyone has a chance to participate in the election,” Al Shahriar Ahmed, managing director of Indet Group, told The Business Post.

The elected directors from the Dhaka region are Mozaharul Haque Shahid, Md Al Shahriar Ahmed, Salay Ahmed Babu, Omar Faruk, Md Moniruzzaman Molla, AKM Mostafa Selim, Mohammad Moazzam Hossain Moti, Hasanul Karim Tamiz, Khan Nazrul Islam Hannan, Md Saiful Islam Sabuz, Md Sultanul Islam Tareq, Md Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury, Md Abdun Noor, Mohammad Atiqur Rahman, Monir Uddin Ahmed, and Jahir Uddin Alomgir.
