Bourses to remain closed today

The stock exchanges in the country will be closed today on account of Eid-e-Miladunnabi-- the birth and death anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

According to the decision of the National Moon Sighting Committee, the holiday was announced on October 20 to observe the Eid-e-Miladunnabi.

Alongside the bourses, all the commercial banks and non-banking financial institutions will remain closed on the day, according to a circular issued by the Bangladesh Bank last week.

As the banks will remain closed, so there will be no trading on the stock exchanges, said an official at the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange (BSEC).

Earlier on November 12 last year, the central bank had published a list of bank holidays for 2021. The list included a 24-day holiday for the current year.

As per the long tradition, the first day of July and the last day of December will be bank holidays this year too. The December 31 bank holiday will fall on a weekend.

In the same way, among the 24 holidays in this calendar year, eight holidays will fall on weekends and other government holidays.

Independent Day, May Day, Jumatul Wida, two days of Eid-ul-Fitr, Durga Puja (Bijoya Dashami), Christmas Day and the bank holiday of December will fall on regular weekends.

However, Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha and other holidays on the Muslim religious festival will depend on moon sighting.
