Iqbal ‘confesses’ to keeping Quran at Puja mandap

Iqbal Hossain, the prime suspect of the Cumilla puja mandap incident, has confessed to keeping the Holy Quran at the mandap in Cumilla’s Nanuadighi during primary interrogation.

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Iqbal had made the confession during interrogation at Cumilla Police Lines on Friday.

He said Iqbal had told police that the club had been removed from the idol of Hanuman after keeping the Quran in the mandap, local media reported.

“But he [Iqbal] has not yet revealed who ordered him to do this,” he said.

The police official also said Iqbal had been behaving erratically since his arrest. Several law enforcement units interrogated Iqbal after he was arrested from Cox’s Bazar and taken to Cumilla Police Lines.

He was detained from the Cox’s Bazar sea beach around 10:30pm on Thursday.

Police identified Iqbal on Wednesday after scrutinising the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.

A police vehicle carrying Iqbal reached Cumilla Police Lines around midday on Friday.

Earlier, he was brought to Cumilla from the Cox’s Bazar police superintendent’s office around 6:30am.

He was wearing a helmet and a bullet-proof jacket when he was brought in front of journalists at the police lines around 12.30pm.

Cumilla Additional Superintendent of Police (crime) M Tanvir Hossain said Iqbal had been brought to Cumilla by a vehicle having tinted windows amid tight security.
