Gazipur mayor faces contempt of court rule

The High Court on Wednesday issued a rule, asking four people, including Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Jahangir Alam, to reply within one week as to why the court shall not initiate a contempt of court proceeding against them.

The other three accused in the case are - Alfaz of Painshal in Joydebpur, Harunor Rashid alias Thandu of Poschim Dogori and Fazlul Huq of BK Bari.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman passed the order holding a hearing on a contempt petition filed in this regard.

According to the case documents, the petitioner Ashraf Uddin Ahmed had filed a writ with the High Court regarding the possession of a land in Mirjapur union under Gazipur Sadar upazila. After hearing his plea, the court had issued an injunction in his favour and he was continuing farming on the land like before.

“But at the start of this year, Mayor Jahangir Alam and his men obstructed Ashraf Uddin Ahmed from using his land, saying they have power of attorney for using the land. After that the petitioner filed this contempt plea and the court today issued the rule,” petitioner’s lawyer Barrister Abul Kalam Azad said.

Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta stood for the state at the hearing.
