Filmmaker Srijit Mukherji wants to make the biopic of Shakib Al Hasan because he has a lot of interest in cricket and Bangladesh, said the filmmaker on Wednesday.

Srijit, an Indian filmmaker, who is married to Bangladeshi actress Rafiath Rashid Mithila, came to the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium to watch the second Test between Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Srijit, regarded as one of the most prolific filmmakers of recent times, has won the national award for films in India twice and recently, he was done with the shooting of the biopic of India’s women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj, titled ‘Shabaash Mithu’.

In conversation with the journalists at the press box of SBNCS, while watching Shakib Al Hasan’s lone battle to avoid the defeat, Srijit said, “If I want to do any project in Bangladesh, that has to be regarding cricket. Because here the popularity of the game sometimes reaches to the fanatical level. People are crazy over cricket here. I heard that there has been a project on Shakib (Al Hasan), but after I came here to Dhaka, I found that’s nothing concrete. I would love to do the biopic of Shakib.”

Srijit believes that Shakib is the person who took Bangladesh to the next level.

“Just see how he is fighting alone (Shakib was batting to save the Test at that time). This one man’s efforts changed the entire team’s performance, which is rare in a team game. He took Bangladesh to a place where the team is now a force to reckon with,” he said.

The filmmaker thinks that after the commercial success of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s biopic, there has been a flow of making sports biopics in India.

“Possibly after the success of ‘Dhoni: The Untold Story’, ‘Mary Kom’, and ‘Bhaag Milkhaa Bhag’, there has been a flow of making biopics of sportspersons. Nevertheless, the cinematic value of a player’s life story is much more appealing than his or her on-field success. Sachin Tendulkar is much more successful as a cricketer, but for a director, the life story of Yuvraj Singh is more appealing because it has that cinematic twists and turns, the spices,” he said.

Srijit said that he has an interest in making a biopic on Mashrafe Bin Mortaza as well.

“I would also like to work on the life story of Mashrafe as well. The way he battled with injuries, became a leader. I highly rate him as a human being. I like him for what he stands for, only a few dare to do so,” the acclaimed film director said.

The award-winning filmmaker is also interested in making a film on the liberation war of 1971.

“I have studied on Azam Khan and found that he was also a cricketer. I heard about Raquibul Hasan, who went into a cricket match with a ‘Joy Bangla’ sticker on his bat. I was thinking about coming up with something which could be my first project in Bangladesh, but I found out there is always a connection with cricket,” he told the journalists.
