Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi has voluntarily resigned from the post of director-general (DG) of Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam, popularly known as Hathazari Madrasa in Chattogram, amid student protests.

Allama Salauddin Nanupuri, Majlis-e-Shura Committee member of the madrasa, confirmed the matter.

He said Allama Shafi stepped down from his post late night Thursday after announcing his decision citing illness and old age complications at the Shura Committee meeting the same night, handing over all the responsibilities to the committee.

After that, he was taken to a hospital in Chattogram from the madrasa premises in an ambulance.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Shafi's son Anas Madani has been suspended from Hathazari Madrasa. Another teacher of the institution and one of Shafi's followers Mawlana Nurul Islam has also been dismissed for life from all activities of the madrasa.

Earlier, the Technical and Madrasah Education Division of the Ministry of Education on Thursday shut down the Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam Madrasa, popularly known as 'Hathazari Madrasha' in Hathazari upazila of Chattogram until further notice.

The decision came after agitated students vandalised the office of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh Amir Shah Ahmed Shafi this morning.

The students began their protest on Wednesday demanding the removal of Hefazat-e-Islam Chief Ahmad Shafi's son Anas Madani from the institution.

The notice regarding the closure of the madrasa was signed by Sayed Asgar Ali, assistant secretary (madrasa-2), saying that the madrasa will remain closed until further notice as it did not follow the conditions given before being allowed to reopen on August 24.
