Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, amir of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, died at a city hospital on Friday after being airlifted to Dhaka from Chattogram for better treatment as his physical condition deteriorated.

He breathed his last around 6:30pm while undergoing treatment at Asgar Ali Hospital in Gendaria, Hefazat leader Mufti Faizullah confirmed the media.

Ahmad Shafi was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Thursday night in an ailing condition.

He was moved to Dhaka on Friday upon suggestion from the medical board formed for his treatment.

On Thursday, Ahmad Shafi voluntarily resigned from the post of director-general (DG) of Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam, popularly known as Hathazari Madrasa in Chattogram, amid student protests.

Technical and Madrasah Education Division of the Ministry of Education on Thursday shut down the Hathazari Madrasa in Hathazari upazila of Chattogram until further notice following student unrest and vandalism at Allama Shafi’s office.
