Following completion of all tests and other necessary activities, three wells of Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL) will add 41 million cubic feet (mmcf) of gas to the national grid daily by the next year.

Pipeline installation and construction of approaching roads are going on in Rashidpur-9 well for this purpose, while the land development of the Hairpur-10 and Kailashtila-8 wells has already begun.

Officials concerned said China's Sinopec and the Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) started the work of the Haripur-10 and Kailashtila-8 wells respectively for gas extraction.

Sinopec and BAPEX will start drilling in their respective wells in May and June 2023, they added.

Providing more details, SGFL Managing Director Mizanur Rahman told the Business Post, “If everything goes according to plan, 10mmcf of gas will be added to the national grid per day from the Rashidpur-9 well by mid-2023.

“Besides, 10 mmcf of gas from the Haripur-10 well, and 21mmcf of gas from the Kailashtila-8 well will be added to the grid daily at the end of the next year.”

Meanwhile, state-owned Petrobangla is carrying out activities, including digging wells, in search of natural gas in Sylhet's Beanibazar and surrounding upazilas.

Officials said SGFL, which operates under Petrobangla, has taken an initiative to conduct 3D seismic surveys in Beanibazar and neighbouring Baralekha and Kanaighat upazilas.

China National Petroleum Corporation’s EGP International is carrying out the activities over an area of 191 square kilometers in the three upazilas and about 25 per cent of the work has already been completed. The survey will continue till December next year, insiders say.

SGFL’s Mizanur Rahman said, “Wells are being dug here to search for gas. We will conduct a DST (drill stem test) of the gas found in the wells. If the test is successful, the volume of gas reserves will be determined. If everything goes well, plants will be set up there later.

“The work of digging three more wells under SGFL is going on. I am optimistic that after the implementation of all the projects, daily gas production from SGFL will increase to 164 million cubic feet by 2025.”
