Bangladesh achieved a new record in power generation on Tuesday night, producing 14,800MW of electricity at 9pm. The previous record was 14,782MW posted on April 16 last year.
The demand for electricity in the country has gone up in recent times due to heat waves, Ramadan and irrigation season.
According to the Power Development Board (PDB), Bangladesh produced up to 14,380MW of power on Monday. The highest demand for Tuesday was set at 14,700MW, but the country produced up to 14,800MW that day.
Though Bangladesh’s current power generation capacity is 22,700MW, only 15,182MW can be achieved for now.
The country cannot produce 2,407MW due to gas shortages, 129MW due to coal shortages, 205MW due to water shortages, 2,139MW due to a lack of repair and maintenance work at plants, PDB sources say.
Bangladesh is importing 1,907MW of power from India.
