The technical evaluation committee of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Sunday proposed hiking the retail power tariff by 15.43 per cent.

This recommendation from the BERC came following a day-long public hearing in the capital, following proposals submitted by six state-owned power distribution bodies seeking to raise power tariff by about 20 per cent at the retail level.

All the six state-owned power distribution bodies that submitted their respective proposals on raising retail power tariff in subsequent of the bulk power tariff hike are – Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB), Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC), Dhaka Electric Supply Company Ltd (Desco), Northern Electricity Supply Company PLS (Nesco), West Zone Power Distribution Company Ltd (WZPDCL).

However, the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) opposed the recommendation, saying that the power price hike will make inflation worse, and public lives will become more difficult.
