The cabinet on Thursday directed the energy division to give explanations to the people over the recent fuel price hike in the country.

The directive was given from the cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held at Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka.

The prime minister joined the meeting virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban, while her cabinet colleagues were present at the meeting room of the Cabinet Division.

Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam, replying to a question at a press briefing after the meeting, said that the cabinet was informed about what the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources or the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) disseminated to the media in detail about the fuel prices.

"The ministry was asked to brief elaborately again as it is a technical issue," he said, adding that the BPC chairman already explained in detail on the matter at a recent press briefing.

In reply to a question if the government would come back from its stance, the cabinet secretary said, "They (the ministry or BPC) will make all things clear."

On August 5, diesel price was increased by Tk 34 to Tk 114 per litre while octane price by Tk 46 to Tk 135 and petrol by Tk 44 to Tk 130.
