The gas supply to households and CNG stations in Chattogram city will return to normal soon, Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Ltd (KGDCL) Managing Director Md Rafiqul Islam said on Monday.

“We are working to normalise the supply,” he said in an emergency meeting with the leaders of Chattogram division and city committee of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) in the port city.

The LNG terminals located at Moheshkhali were moved safely to reduce the damage caused by Cyclone Mocha, Rafiqul said. For this, the gas supply in Chattogram was halted and the customers were informed as well, he added.

Most of the households in Chattogram have not been able to light their stoves for the last two days amid an acute gas shortage after supply from two floating LNG terminals in Moheshkhali was suspended due to the cyclonic storm.

According to KGDCL officials, imported LNG gas is supplied from the floating terminal in Moheshkhali and distributed through the pipelines. But as a precautionary measure ahead of the landfall of Mocha, LNG-carrying vessels were moved to a safer place.

During the meeting, CAB leaders said every family had to spend an extra amount of around Tk 4,000 in two days due to the gas supply disruption.

They also demanded that normal gas supply to households and CNG stations be ensured through an alternative system during any natural disaster or crisis.
