Energypac Electronics Limited has recently signed a Joint Development Agreement with MPWRNRGY Pte Ltd (Singapore) to co-develop solar power plants in Bangladesh to help the South Asian country meet its growing demand for energy.
This will also help Bangladesh achieve the targeted Sustainable Development Goals, according to a press release. These plants will feed electricity to the national grid through long-term Power Purchase Agreement or the existing net metring system approved by the government, said the press release.
Bangladesh’s electricity demand will shoot up to 20,000 megawatts this year, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Division. The country primarily depends on oil, gas and coal for electricity generation.
The government has been encouraging and exploring greener alternatives. In the Power System Master Plan, the government set a target to get 10 per cent of the total power generation from renewable sources by 2020. Beyond 2020, the government intends to expand the 10 per cent renewable energy target by 2041, although not predetermined in the existing policy.
Ahmed Mashroor Huda, Head of Brand and Market Communication of Energypac Electronics Limited, said that solar parks produce safe and locally produced energy and has the potential to meet the growing energy demand and improve the people’s quality of life.
Bangladesh has the largest off-grid solar power programme in the world, World Bank said in a press release in early April this year. The programme enabled 20 million Bangladeshis to access electricity.
Nabeel Ismeer, Co-Founder of MPWRNRGY, said, "Bangladesh has one of the world's largest domestic energy programmes. The opportunities created by implementing Solar PV generation are manifold, including reduced CO2 emissions and other pollutants.”
"Taking advantage of low cost of energy LCOE will eventually mean better prices for Bangladeshi consumers,” he added.
