The government should focus on production efficiency, low carbon emission, better pricing, improvement in transmission line for overall improvement of power sector, speakers at a webinar have said.
The Centre for Policy Dialogue on Sunday organised the webinar titled “The Power Sector in the National Budget for FY2022: Perspectives on Allocative Priorities & Reform Agenda” where speakers also stressed on examining the efficiency of fossil-fuel-based power generation.
Mustafizur Rahman, Distinguished Fellow of CPD said: “The government's recent commitment for developing a clean energy-based power sector generated a lot of attention. Budget for the next fiscal year should focus on reduction of fossil-fuel-based power generation and enhancement of renewable energy-based power generation.”
Dr Khondaker Golam Moazzem CPD’s Research Director in his keynote speech said: “The power sector showed a mixed performance during the current fiscal year. Positive changes have been observed in the cases of generation, transmission and distribution of power.”
Rehman Sobhan, the chairman of CPD, questioned the operation of so many outdated powerplants in the country.
"The government is committed to reduce carbon emission and there are efforts to phase out usage of coal energy. Quick rental power plants will be gradually phased out," said Mohammad Hossain, director general of Power Cell.
Executive director of CPD, Dr Fahmida Khatun, chaired the webinar.
