The state-run Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL) has confirmed fresh gas reserves at a workover well – which was declared abandoned six years back – in Beanibazar upazila of Sylhet.

Authorities said it will now be possible to extract 7-8 million cubic feet (MMcf) of gas and 17 barrels of condensate per day from this well. SGFL Managing Director Shaheenur Islam told reporters that the testing of Beanibazar-1 well started on Thursday.

SGFL discovered the presence of gas at a depth of 3,454 metres of the well, he said, adding that the testing shows some 10 million cubic feet of gas flow at 3,100 pH pressure.

The well was declared abandoned in 2016 after extraction of 35 billion cubic feet of gas from 3,450 metres of depth. On September 10 this year, the SGFL started the well’s workover amid the ongoing energy crisis in Bangladesh.
