The government has formed a national committee to review contracts under the Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provisions) Act-2010 to ensure transparency and safeguard governmental interests in the energy sector.
Retired High Court Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury has been appointed as the chair of the committee, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Thursday evening.
The committee comprises a group of experts, including Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Professor Abdul Hasib Chowdhury, Audit, Tax and Advisory partner of KPMG Bangladesh Ali Ashfaq, economist Zahid Hussain, and University of London Professor Moshtak Hossain Khan.
The committee's responsibilities include gathering information and data from various sources and auditing relevant documents. It is also empowered to invite individuals and institutions for hearings to gather comprehensive insights.
The primary objective of the committee is to assess whether the government's interests have been adequately protected in the contracts executed under the special provisions of the act. Based on its findings, the committee will make recommendations for future actions.
The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources will provide the necessary administrative and logistical support to facilitate the committee's work.
